London, day 7

Today we decided to go to the British Museum, and we needed way more time - it was so cool!  We really only had time for a few highlights.  We started with the Rosetta Stone.  So interesting that as part of the Brits treaty when they defeated Napoleon they demanded to have the Rosetta Stone.  Napoleon had taken it from Egypt while the French were there.  We saw lots of ancient Egyptian statues, and decided we've seen the highlights of Egypt now, too - no need to go there :)...The mummies were amazing.  They're in really good condition and you can still see the paint and writing on the coffins.  Goosie was a little freaked out by them.  The other highlight was the Parthenon friezes.  I found myself wondering why the Brits have all these treasures, but we read that Lord Elgin (who brought the Parthenon friezes to the UK) saved and preserved them from being destroyed, so in the end it seemed like a really good thing.  I ended up feeling grateful they had saved and valued all these things.  Every room we walked through had amazing treasures - swords from the first century, coins from Anglo Saxon times, Assyrian statues from Old Testament times, and on and on.  Everyone but Goose and Suse could have stayed a lot longer :), but we needed to make our play.

We had tickets to the musical, Matilda.  Grandma took Goosie home in a cab and babysat so the rest of us could enjoy the show.  So nice of her!  We loved the show.  The character, Mrs. Trunchbull, was played by a man, who was so good...we were dying!  The girl who played Matilda was great, too, but she had such a strong British accent, she was hard to understand at parts.  It was a really cute, fun show.  From there, we walked home, but got a little sidetracked.  We stopped into St Martin in the Fields where they had live music with a harpsichord and strings.  Next we ate dinner at Wagamama's, the noodle house chain a couple of people have recommended to us.  On our walk back from the subway, Zelle, Lu and I got food for a picnic tomorrow for Father's Day, and stopped at this little chocolatier that I've been wanting to go into to get Mark some treats.  It was another amazing day here - I can't believe we get to do this!
